Altiero Spinelli

Altiero Spinelli (born on 31 August 1907 in Rome and died on 23 May 1986 in the same city) was an Italian politician and supporter of European federalism. A journalist, young communist and anti-fascist activist, he was sentenced in 1927, under the Mussolini regime, to 16 years in prison. He was deported to the island of Ventotene, where he wrote a manifesto for a united Europe. He is sometimes cited among the Founding Fathers of the European Union because of his influence on post-war European integration.
